  The Nurse Knot
Products to make your work day easy
and your time at home fun and comfortable.

Oximeters measure the oxygen percentage in hemaoglobin. It is usually attached to the lobe of the ear or fingertip and records the flow of blood past a probe in the unit. Some units make a sound or graph which coincides with the pulse beat.

In home use of pulse oximeters have become popular and units can be found for sale at affordable prices. There are many companies like Nonin, Nellcor, and Checkmate that offer pulse oximeters for sale to the general public in the form of a portable oximeter, finger pulse oximeter, or a digital pulse oximeter.

Supplemental oxygen is a fact of life for many people.  After the initial shock of being prescribed with supplemental oxygen there is a stage of acute awareness of the oxygen but sometimes it's just so routine that we don't remember to check the oxygen levels of the patient. So be aware of the warning signs of lack of oxygen which are:

1. Cyanotic -Lips or nails turn a bluish/purplish color.
2. Slurred words or not making sense.
3. Headaches
4. Drowsiness
5. Obviously and increase in  shortness of breath, irregular breathing or breathlessness.
6. A feeling of anxiety.

These are warning signs meant to help you avoid complications. They may not necessarily reflect a lack of oxygen, but the good thing is that with a pulse oximeter it is very easy, and quick, to check the oxygen saturation levels.
